Vancouver vs Bellingham: The Honest Cross-Border Flight Comparison (2026)

Six popular routes, comparing YVR fares to BLI total cost including border, parking, and gas:

The ancillary column includes: gas (~$25 CAD roundtrip for the shorter drive), 7 days of BLI economy parking (~$11 USD/day = ~$105 CAD for a week), and a small buffer for border-crossing time value. It does not include a checked bag (Allegiant charges $35 to $55 USD per bag each way) or a hotel if you sleep in Bellingham the night before.

The pattern: Allegiant sun destinations are the sweet spot. BLI savings on these routes are so large that the drive pays for itself even for solo travellers. The Seattle route via Alaska Airlines is a smaller gap but still wins because the YVR-SEA flight on Air Canada or Alaska costs $200 to $300 CAD for what is essentially a 45-minute hop.

• US sun destinations on Allegiant. Las Vegas, Phoenix-Mesa, Palm Springs, Los Angeles (LAX), Oakland (OAK), Burbank (BUR), San Diego (SAN). These are Allegiant's bread-and-butter routes from BLI, and fares routinely start at $50 to $80 USD one-way. YVR to the same cities on WestJet or Air Canada costs 2 to 4 times more.
• US interior cities on Frontier. Chicago (ORD), Dallas (DFW), Denver (DEN). Frontier launched these from BLI in recent years and fares are $80 to $150 USD one-way, underpricing the YVR equivalent by $150+ CAD.
• Seattle on Alaska Airlines. BLI to SEA on Alaska is $30 to $60 USD one-way, versus $100 to $150 CAD on Air Canada YVR-SEA. If you are connecting through Seattle to a domestic US flight, BLI to SEA to your final destination is often cheaper than YVR direct.
• Short trips for South Surrey, Langley, and Abbotsford residents. The border is 20 to 40 minutes from these communities. The drive to BLI is actually shorter than the drive to YVR through Vancouver traffic for anyone living south of the Fraser River.

• International routes. Europe, Asia, Australia, Mexico resort towns (Cancun, Puerto Vallarta). BLI has no long-haul service and no connecting hub to reach these. YVR is the only option.
• Hawaii. YVR to Honolulu and Maui on WestJet and Air Canada is competitive because both carriers run high-frequency service. BLI to Hawaii requires a connection through SEA or LAX, which eats the savings.
• Cancun and Mexican beach resorts. WestJet Vacations, Sunwing, and Air Transat all serve YVR-CUN and YVR-PVR directly at charter prices that BLI cannot match.
• Rain-season weekends (October to March). The I-5 corridor between the border and BLI runs through heavy rain and occasional black ice. If the weather is bad, the drive risk is higher per dollar saved than it is for the Toronto-Buffalo corridor.
• Central Vancouver and North Shore residents on short trips. A 90-minute drive to BLI plus a 30-minute border wait adds 4+ hours of round-trip driving to a 3-day weekend. If the fare gap is under $200 per person, YVR is the easier choice.
• Trips requiring checked bags on Allegiant. Allegiant charges $35 to $55 USD per checked bag per direction. Two bags roundtrip adds $140 to $220 USD ($190 to $300 CAD) to the BLI total, which often wipes out the savings. If you cannot fly with a personal item and a carry-on only, re-run the math with bags included.

The Vancouver-Bellingham corridor uses two border crossings, both in South Surrey/Blaine:

The practical call. Check the CBSA border wait times site (cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/bwt-taf) and the CBP site (bwt.cbp.gov) before you leave. If Peace Arch is over 30 minutes, swing to Pacific Highway (5 minutes further). On long weekends (Victoria Day, Canada Day, Labour Day, Thanksgiving), expect 60 to 90+ minutes at both crossings without NEXUS.

Coming home. The return crossing (US to Canada via CBSA) is typically shorter than the outbound on weekdays but can back up on Sunday evenings. Plan accordingly.

NEXUS matters more for the BLI play than for the BUF play, because the Peace Arch and Pacific Highway crossings are the two busiest passenger vehicle crossings in Western Canada. Long-weekend waits without NEXUS regularly hit 90 minutes. With NEXUS, the same crossing takes 5 to 15 minutes.

If you cross the border by land even twice a year, NEXUS pays for itself on the first trip through saved wait time alone. Apply at ttp.cbp.dhs.gov or nexus.gc.ca.

BLI is a small airport. That is its advantage.

• Parking. Economy lot is roughly $11 USD per day ($15 CAD) with no shuttle needed (you walk to the terminal). Compare to YVR at $25 to $42 CAD per day plus the SkyTrain or shuttle. On a 7-day trip, BLI parking costs ~$105 CAD versus $175 to $294 CAD at YVR. The parking savings alone are $70 to $190 CAD.
• Security. One TSA checkpoint. Lines are short because the airport serves 3 airlines. Typical screening time is 10 to 20 minutes without PreCheck, 5 to 10 with PreCheck (included in NEXUS).
• Carry-on and bag rules. Allegiant's personal item is a small backpack (18x14x8 in). Their carry-on bag is a paid add-on ($20 to $35 USD each way). Checked bags are $35 to $55 USD each way. Alaska Airlines includes a carry-on and personal item free. Frontier includes a personal item free and charges for carry-on and checked.
• Rental car return. If you drove to BLI and parked, your car is in the lot when you return. No shuttle, no ground transport cost back to the city. This is the smoothest return experience of any Canadian cross-border play.

• Night before: check CBSA and CBP border wait times. Check weather on I-5 between Blaine and Bellingham. If either is concerning, consider driving to Bellingham the night before and staying at a $90 to $130 USD hotel near the airport.
• Morning of: leave Vancouver at least 3 hours before your BLI departure. That gives you 30 to 45 minutes of driving to the border, 15 to 30 minutes at the crossing (with NEXUS), 20 minutes of driving from the border to BLI, 15 minutes to park and walk to the terminal, and a 1-hour buffer.
• At the border: passport and NEXUS card ready. Standard questions: destination, purpose, duration. No declaration needed for personal luggage.
• At BLI: park in the economy lot, walk to the terminal. Check in at the airline kiosk or counter. Security is typically under 15 minutes.
• Coming home: leave BLI with a 2.5-hour buffer before the border closing time you need. The return crossing is faster on weekdays but plan for Sunday-evening traffic.

Abbotsford International Airport (YXX) sits on the Canadian side of the border, 45 minutes east of Vancouver. It serves some of the same sun-destination routes as BLI via Flair Airlines and Swoop (now merged into WestJet). YXX eliminates the border crossing entirely but fares are typically $50 to $100 CAD higher than BLI Allegiant prices on the same route.

If you live in Abbotsford, Chilliwack, or the eastern Fraser Valley, YXX is the easier choice. If you live in Surrey, Langley, or central Vancouver, BLI is usually cheaper and roughly the same drive time.
